"I built a home and then I burned it down.."

Semi-finalist in Mike Pinder's (The Moody Blues) SONGWARS songwriting competition.

about

"It's a Buddhist Koan on a lilypad".. Proclaims all yet says nothing...
A live recording: acoustic guitar, electric bass, repeating drum machine pattern with stop/start pedal. Bill & I did live harmony, the only overdubs are some additional backup vocals I added. Really just 2 piece: acoustic guitar & bass with a drum machine back beat. Still sounds so BIG to me, for two guys.. It doesn't get any more raw, or fun, than this...but voice worn out...LOL..Still made the final judging in Mike Pinder's (MOODY BLUES) SongWars competition...some folks actually CAN hear beyond production value, thank God...

lyrics

I'VE WORN PLAID

Years rushing by…
Further from hello than goodbye…
The world keeps spinning ‘round…
While battles are raging on the ground…

I believed, and I’ve been fooled,
I’ve obeyed and I broke the rules,
I’ve been to blame and back again,
I called your name and I shared your sin..
I’ve told the truth, and I’ve gone too far,
I tasted youth in the back of my daddy’s car..
(It tasted good, sweet, hot, wet, fragrant..
I didn’t bathe for days..)

I’ve been good, and did as I should,
Baby, I’ve been bad, and did as I could,
I gave it all, and then I took it back,
I saw the light fade to black..
I’ve been lost, and I’ve been found,
I built a home, and then I burned it down…
(The kids were roasting marshmallows on a stick)

God doesn’t want you to know…

I’ve been a friend, followed here to there,
I’ve run my fingers through your hair..
I’ve been kissed, and I’ve been unfair,
I’ll be missed, and I took your share,
I served pain, and I’ve gone mad..
Well I danced in the rain, and I’ve worn plaid…
(Burberry, argyle, madras, colors bleeding down my back..)

We laugh, we cry,
We live.. Baby, we die,
Empires rise and fall..
We love, we hate,
It’s too soon, before it’s too late,
We run before we crawl..

Time marches on, souls come and go,
Truth’s told in lies, we’ll never know..

You better run, it’s the human race..
I’ve got a gun, and I don’t like your face..
If you want nice, you better learn to float..
Cause three blind mice ain’t gonna row your boat..
Merrily down the stream.. Life is but a dream…
Three blind mice ain't gonna row your boat...
(Row row row your boat, gently down the stream..)

I’ve worn plaid.. I’ve worn plaid..
I’m so good at being bad..
It’s a Buddhist koan on a lilypad..
Baby, I’ve worn plaid..
You’re gonna wish you had..

God doesn’t want us to know…

about

Charles "Chaz" Laughon aka Chaze Lounge Wilmington

I've posted some barely adequate recordings here, many bad writer's renditions, of a few songs I've written in my life. Most of my songs never recorded, likely never will be. No matter, just mutterings to myself. I'm a lyricist who believes that language is a dog chasing it's tail. Didn't immerse into human life as I probably should've, or perhaps I immersed too much. The dark births the light. ... more
